Case Studies from Cyber Security Partners’ Clients

On this page we discuss one of our successful Client Case Studies involving ISO 27001 Certification and Cyber Essentials Accreditation, and the benefits of these for the client. Read more below:

Client Project

Overview

CSP were approached by a contact who had moved from one of our established clients to another company to help increase their security and data protection through gaining an accreditation in ISO 27001. This client is in the automotive sector and are ‘recognised as the worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of transmission systems supporting a wide client base covering top level Motorsport and high performance Automotive.’

They identified that they needed to improve their overall security to be able to achieve accreditation, but the requirement to achieve it was driven by customer demand and a desire to be more secure.

CSP offer certification and accreditation services to achieve ISO27001 certification, but after in depth discussions with the stakeholders, it was agreed that a longer-term engagement was required to build up the security culture within the whole organisation. This was preferred to just implementing a set of policies that would meet the requirement for accreditation but not ensure the ongoing security of the company.

The Process

As with all project of this nature, CSP carried out a gap analysis of the company’s existing security controls and management system. CSP began the project by carrying out a gap analysis against the 27002 controls and holding interviews with senior stakeholders across the organisation. It became apparent that, like a large number of companies, they were doing a lot of things in a secure manner, but it was not documented and measured in any meaningful way. This dependency on ensuring the company was secure was heavily weighted towards the IT department, which at the time consisted of just three people.

It was also apparent that the company, like many manufacturing organisations, relied heavily on legacy shop floor machinery which whilst fully functional, was controlled by out of support software systems. CSP therefore put together a two-prong approach, one to deal with implementing technical controls to reduce the risk from the use of these legacy systems and one to deal with implementing a security management system to ensure ongoing control and measurement of the overall cyber security of the business.

So, what was the solution?

While the simple solution may have been to get them to replace or update the control systems on the shop floor, like many manufacturing companies find, this is just not financially viable. So, a security wrapper, including a plan to segregate the shop floor network, implementing security controls to an access point on the network effectively isolating and protecting the vulnerable computers from the Internet. Furthermore, other controls were designed and implemented in liaison with both internal and external IT expertise, to greatly reduce the potential attack surface of the organisation.

CSP and the client took a stepped approach to implementing a security management system, firstly forming a security working group with stakeholders across the business from finance, HR, design office, and shop floor operations. This group with CSP’s assistance began creating documentation to cover the security elements of their specific functions, and defining the measurements that worked for them to allow reporting to senior management the state of cyber security within the organisation.

As a measurement step prior to going for ISO27001 accreditation, we arranged and assisted the client through the UK governments Cyber Essentials certification. This provided a useful independent measure of the implementation so far, as the CE standard is not as definitive as the international standard. The client was successfully accredited at the first attempt and has since maintained it on an annual basis.

Multiple CSP staff provided different skill sets to assist the client in building the security management system. Our data protection specialist worked with their inhouse DPO to help ensure compliance while enabling the data protection procedures, to integrate with the security management and incident management processes. We provided a business continuity and disaster recovery workshop with stakeholders across the business, followed by a desktop simulation exercise, to help them better define their business continuity plan. and understand the threats

After over 18 months’ worth of work, two of our CSP lead auditors carried out mock audits to prepare the organisation for accreditation and then supported them through the accreditation process.

The Outcome

The client successfully achieved ISO27001 certification in April 2023. As they have an international client base, the fact that this standard is internationally accepted, has allowed them to market themselves as a secure supplier to many of the major automotive companies, benefiting them tremendously.

It also meant they were well prepared when a phishing email attack, from one of their customers in the USA, lead to an infection within a small part of their cloud-based email service. The incident response procedure was enacted quickly and the potential spread of the attack to all their customers and suppliers was prevented.

Lessons learned from that incident has led to improvements in the security awareness training, and led to changes to the monitoring and alerting that is in place with their IT supplier to help highlight earlier in an attack.

ISO 27001

Holding the ISO accreditation also means that the client now has confidence in applying for Trusted Information Security Assessment Exchange (TISAX) certification. It is an assessment and exchange mechanism for information security in the German automotive industry. The standard is based on the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) catalogue of Information Security Assessment (ISA) questionnaire, which in turn largely follows the international ISO/IEC 27001 standard. This is a requirement for a number of the main car manufacturers, which will lead to potential larger markets.

CSP’s relationship with the client has not ended, as we now provide part of their internal audit function, thereby ensuring they stay on track for the annual accreditation audit and act as advisors to them on security matters.

Results Summarised

CSP provided multiple skills to assist them in meeting their goals. These included:

  • ISO27001 Implementation and Auditing Skills
  • Data Privacy Skills
  • Security Architecture Skills
  • Stakeholder Management Skills
  • As the client noted in their feedback to us – “My prior experience of 27001 was that it required a huge team and a huge budget to implement properly. CSP’s pragmatism from the start was a massive help and very reassuring.”

CSP’s technique of identifying the strengths of the company early in the project, meant that work could be concentrated on the areas of weaknesses.

Again, as noted in the feedback from the client, CSP staff “became one of the team”.

We ensured that we were available “just in case”, which gave the client confidence in implementing controls when facing opposition.

The main outcomes for the client were;
  • Cyber Essentials Accreditation
  • ISO 27001 Accreditation
  • Well prepared for TISAX future accreditation.
  • Alignment of ISO27001/ISO9001 and Data Protection requirements to ease management of multiple management systems.
  • Vastly increased security awareness across the whole company.
  • By becoming part of the team, IT personnel are happy to approach us with questions or ask our opinions on data and security matters.
  • Confidence in dealing with security incidents.
  • Confidence in the security structure, leading to them preparing to achieve industry specific security standards.
