1. Did you know, 3D printing has its foundation set in the 19th Century?
The earliest application of the layering method used by today’s 3D printers took place in the manufacture of topographical maps and this basis developed up to 1980 where 3D printing as we know it now began.
2. Block Party!
Blockchain is a word used a lot more than its first inception back in 2008. Its technology was developed and deployed to launch BitCoin but is now widely used. Although most will admit to not really knowing what it does. A simple explanation is that Blockchain is an incorruptible way to record transactions between parties via ways of a digital ledger which all members on the transaction peer-peer network can see.
3. Inventor of the Firewall
There are lots of folks in our industry which have been crowned with the title ‘The Father of the Firewall’. But the first inception of a firewall and where most security experts trace the firewall’s roots, goes back to work done at Digital Equipment Corp in the late 1980s by Jeff Mogul, Brian Reid, and Paul Vixie, starting with the gatekeeper.dec.com gateway, as well as to Mogul’s “screend” technology.
4. A Capable Machine
Back in the 1970’s, an extraordinarily reliable and ‘fast’ machine was invented, the PDP (Programmed Data Processor). So reliable that this machine is still in use today as a part of the US Navy’s ship radar systems and, as rumoured, at work within the British Atomic Weapons Establishment. It’s also said to be still in use at Airbus SAS, and was part of the designing of the A320 family of planes.
5. Honey, I Shrunk the Tech!
Have you ever wondered what spearheaded ‘miniaturisation’? As in, that computer, camera, radio, alarm clock etc all now fit in your pocket rather than needing a dedicated room? It all started with the first transistor radio. The Regency Pocket radio post World War II innovated and designed by well-known Tech giants, Texas Instruments and Industrial Development Engineering Associates and built on technology created by Bell Labs and the first gadget of its kind to use transistors and thus changing portable telecommunications overnight.
