New Year, New Start?

Lynne Mowles, CSP Office Manager, goes over her thoughts for new opportunities in 2022.

As a New Year starts, many people start to reflect on what they want to change thus making New Year’s resolutions! The most common of which are:

  1. Exercise more
  2. Lose weight
  3. Get organised
  4. Learn a new skill or hobby
  5. Live life to the fullest
  6. Save more money/spend less money
  7. Quit smoking/Drink less
  8. Spend more time with family and friends
  9. Travel more
  10. Read more

I would personally like to look at number 5, but more focusing on number 4 too, learning a new skill that could help to change your career. Many people now start a new career later in life when they have had time to really think about what it is that they want to do. We don’t all choose the correct career path when leaving school, college or university and often get comfortable in a job because it pays the bills. Often it is a lack of support from an employer to progress, that takes away the confidence to move up or move on to something new.

There are so many online resources and courses out there that can help people retrain whilst still working in their current roles. The Open University is a fantastic way to do this, with the flexibility of doing your coursework in your own time. I personally used an online learning platform last year, to learn new skills that would support my colleagues and help me in my current role. The team at CSP are lucky that we are encouraged to continually improve our skills and are supported in doing so.

A great example of this is, last year one of our Directors, Chris Bell, became a mentor with an online Cyber Security training school, Capslock. Chris was helping to address the current skills gap that is within this sector, by supporting individuals who are wanting to re-train into Cyber Security. Mentors work through an online platform and use their Cyber Security industry knowledge to support the students, many of whom are new to Cyber Security.

CSP have employed two people who made the decision last year to retrain and work in Cyber Security within our team. They have a passion for learning and have become valued members of our ever-growing team.

So, maybe this year your New Year’s resolution won’t just be one of the potential top ten examples above, but it might be a significant change that will impact and improve your long-term future.

Happy New Year from Team CSP!
